Hello there…
I’m Gill, an Australian illustrator working under the studio name A Singing Cricket. My work is inspired by the quiet magic of the natural world, those small moments and overlooked creatures that reveal themselves when you slow down and look closely.
Inspired by the traditions of natural history and botanical illustrations, my work blends nature observation with a gentle sense of storytelling. I work primarily in watercolour, gouache, pencil and digital media, creating detailed illustrations of flora and fauna with whimsical stories.
Small creatures, fantasy animals and intimate natural scenes often sit at the heart of my work. I’ve long been inspired by the powerful tradition of illustrated natural history and artists such as Beatrix Potter, whose work brought knowledge and narrative together. I love painting images that invite curiosity, discovery and a quiet sense of wonder.
My work is well suited to picture books, book covers and nature-focused publishing. I love collaborating with authors and publishers to create illustrations that support meaningful storytelling while remaining grounded in the beauty and wonder of the natural world.
